Having lived in Italy for two years and enjoyed Firenze on a fairly regular basis, I miss being able to easily get my hands on a decent Chianti. So I was excited to receive a tasting sample of Nipozzano Riserva 2007 from Folio Wine Partners this past week.
Produced by Marchesi de Frescobaldi, this deep, purple-edged ruby wine brings a whole lot more than grapes to the mouth party. Blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and dark cherry are some of the additional flavors you’ll note, along with sage, rosemary, vanilla and cinnamon. Balsam, black pepper and cocoa powder are also on board.
Personal verdict: A decent Chianti I’d feel comfortable serving company, as well as enjoying any time. It also falls in the category I like to call “affordable splurges”, with an SRP of $21.99.
Pairing suggestions: A cheese platter for happy hour featuring aged cheeses such as asiago, pecorino-romano or parmesan. An Italian oil fondue would also be nice, with bits of beef on the skewers along with your vegetables of choice. Serve to friends on your apartment balcony before a night at the opera to keep with the Italian theme.
