Recipes: My Mom’s Molasses Drop Cookies

These make a thick, cake style cookie. My mother always made these for my Dad to take to work in his lunch bucket.
1/2 cup margarine, 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup of molasses, 1 cup white sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup milk (or water or coffee), 4 cups flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp ginger, 1 tsp ground cloves, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp baking soda.
Mix all ingredients and drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Whwere does the molasses come in?
Chuckle . .. I guess this is why I shouldn’t post recipe entries when I don’t have a strong enough supply of coffee . . .
Coleen, I just went and dug out the recipe card my Mom wrote out for me and guess what? She left it off the card too. Guess we were both short on caffeine that day. Thanks for catching the glitch. I’ll put in a call to her this morning, and we’ll see if we can get the update on in the next day or so. Thanks again for posting the question. Better to find out now then when I’m on the road with no way to check.
OK, just got off the tech support call with the Momster. She said there should be one cup of molasses added to the ingredients list, as well as 2 tsp of baking soda.
We got discussing why they might have been left off the card she wrote, and remembered that she sent me a bunch of these recipes one year when I was overseas, so there must have been a rush on getting the Christmas package out.
Either way, thanks for catching the issue, Coleen. Hope you enjoy the recipe.
Oh and by the way, if you are into such things, these things when they are hot taste great with a little peanut butter slathered on them.
