Helpful Hint: Camping With Canned Cheese

As we’ve been settling in at the lake cottage with a smaller than usual fridge and no larger freezer, we’ve been looking at ways to maintain our sanity in addition to our frugality.

With renovations and unpacking to consider, as well as maintaining our online business, we have lots on our plate. One thing we splurged on (it was the generic brand, calm down) was the canned squirt cheese you can usually find in the cracker and snack aisle at the grocery store. If we are cooking hot dogs on the outdoor fire, or want a quick bagel in the morning (Who knew they made a cream cheese flavor now?), this is what we use. They don’t have to be refrigerated, which is what got me thinking that this might be a great suggestion for families camping with children, college students living in dorms, or people living in an ultra compact one room studio with a mini fridge. Bagels with cream cheese and a little fruit is a decent nutritional start to the day, does not require a fridge, and involves little to no dish washing. The cheese dog idea is something I used to do with my Dad as a girl when he would take me ice fishing. It’s not the most dramatic savings opportunity I’ve posted before, for sure. But this stuff is affordable enough that if you are on the road living out of a cooler for a few days on the highway, or are in any of the above situations, it can still make a difference.
