One of the coolest ideas I’ve seen for these was at a hostel and restaurant we stayed at in Thailand.

The legs off of old sewing machines are solid iron and have the connecting piece at the bottom to provide stability. The restaurant had long dining room tables made by putting two sets of these legs end to end and topping them with beveled glass. Rubber disks were added between the glass and iron to prevent slipping and tipping. These were the main table design throughout the whole interior of the restaurant. Talk about tons of character! The glass also provided a nice reflective surface for evening candlelight for loads of atmosphere. My mother also has a neat kitchen piece with one large iron sewing machine base topped with a thick piece of recycled wood. Looks great and holds a ton of stuff. I would think you could put several of these end to end as well with a longer piece of butcher block and caster wheels for a rolling kitchen island with major style.
