Ice Cube Tray Savings

Just upgraded your fridge to one of those fancy models with the built in ice makers? Don’t throw away your ice cube trays! In fact, you may want to hit some yard sales to stock up on your supply.

Generally, each cube slot holds two full tablespoons, with two frozen cubes of liquid or puree yielding a quarter cup. So what, you ask? It’s your passport to big savings, that’s what.  Here are some things you can buy in larger cans or make a homemade version of and then freeze in ice cube trays for quick recipe add-ins to soups, tacos, baking, etc.

  • tomato paste
  • tomato sauce
  • chicken, vegetable, beef or fish stock
  • homemade baby food
  • apple sauce  and gravy (thanks to Nancy for these two ideas)
