Hi Christine.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences. I think what I will do instead is leave your comment up here for folks to consider. If others have had problems, or not, this would be a great place to have a discussion between current yurt owners as well to share experiences on such things as quality and price with regards to all yurt manufacturers. Certainly, Great American Yurts (or whatever they are being called now) is welcome to respond as well. As long as everything stays professional, so to speak, I'm willing to keep moderating the conversation.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to chime in.

I see that you have Great American Yurts on your list. I don't know if you have had any personal dealings with them or just found their name online. But I own one of their yurts, and found it to be sub-standard to a Pacific Yurt. Also, their customer service GREATLY lacks organization and kindness.
We are not the first to have been dealt with unethically, they have been reported to the BBB on several occasions, something we didn't find until we had already purchased a yurt from them.
It appears that their poor business dealings and legal issues have caused them to use a new name. they now are called Yurts of America.
I beg of you to remove their site from your listing, and encourage people to look elsewhere. Don't be sucked into purchasing their yurts just because they're cheaper than the leading yurt companies.

Thank you for your question. Actually, we are still choosing a location on our lake front lot for a yurt. However, we have narrowed it down to two potential companies. Pacific Yurts, and The Colorado Yurt Company. They both had good comments out there in internet land and appear comparable in quality. One cool feature the Colorado Yurt company has that Pacific Yurts doesn't is the roll up walls. We also found when we picked out all the features we wanted from each company, the Colorado Yurt company was slightly cheaper. However, not all of the features were exact from company to company, so it's hard to really say. But these are the two that top our list when we finally decide to buy. Good luck with your yurt quest.

What company did you got with to purchase your yurt and what size?

We have researched a great deal and now live in a 30 foot trailer so living small and simple is good and easy. We live in the southern Baja where there is only the hurricane season for rain.

Thank you for this information. There is some here that we did not find ourselves.

Hi Trish. From the literature I received, there is a raised circular ridge that you put on top of the decking that the yurt attaches to. You then put in formal flooring, but the deck or round cement base, or whatever you use for the base still provides the support. You might want to check out the You Tube slide shows from the other post, since they are up on the web now. There are several images of the assembly process, including this ridge. Thanks for commenting.

I have wanted to live in a yurt for a very long time. I didn't ever think my husband would ever go for the idea. I finally showed him some yurts online (he is from Mexico and had never heard of them) and he loves the idea.
So I am currently searching for which company to go with but there is something that I don't understand - how does one keep the wind and the rain from coming in through the bottom of the yurt (ones that are not wood paneled)?

Thanks for all the helpful links by the way.

You are very welcome. After spending so much time on it ourselves and realizing how deep we had to dig for certain topics and pieces of information, we decided it would be nice to save some other people the trouble. Some day, I hope to subcategorize everything . . . but not today (ha!). I checked out your yurt merchandise. Cute!

Thanks so much for taking the time to post.

Thanks for the great Yurt info!!

I just purchased 5 acres of land in West Texas where I am going to put a much anticipated Yurt. Your links are very very helpful!

In the meantime, I have created Yurt themed merchandise I am selling on cafe press. :)

THANKS!!

Thanks for the links, there are a few I didn't know (and I did a lot of research myself). Take a look at my web-site http://housing.byrene.com/Yurt - it contains yurt notes of mine with an online yurt calculator in case yo plan to build a yurt yourself.

this is a fantastic list and I can really use it right now. thank you so much for sharing it! I am helping to build a yurt/tee pee rental camp in Alaska and the local interest is very high. but so far few have actually seen or been inside one yet. These links will help broaden their visions.
